Hey Chris no doubt about it, s-l-o-w play is the #1 cause for long games. Without a doubt. Personally I love hurry up offense (as in the shootout rules) and fast play.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again, I really love playing these rules and the timing of the game (15 boxes per quarter) is great. I think the whole shorter game clock came up in a couple games simply because we wanted to finish the season that weekend and we just didn't want to miss that opportunity. AJ was definately rushed for time so it worked well for him. Also, Matt C and I played a game on Sunday with 10 boxes quarters instead of 15 because I had to get going and we didn't want to miss our chance to play. We made it real simple...no other rule changes, just 2/3 off the game clock. I believe there were 8 total possesions and even though both of us would have prefferred the regular game length, I think it was better than not playing the game at all, you know what I mean.

Let's not get ridiculous throw all of our hard work in setting up fair rules out of the window just to get a couple of more plays in. We already have ways to speed up the game within our rule set, we just need to utilize it. I have played multiple games this year in excess of 3 hours because guys are taking 5 minutes to set up each play. You take that out of the equation, and I assure you that games will go by a lot faster.
How did you block a FG in one second? I remember when it was 2 seconds and thats just insane with the speed of these guys.

We could go on and on about rules set. I remember when I worked hard for a few years to get a good set in just so guys would be interested and I changed and watched them get changed while taking a back seat.
You cant please everyone as we all know.

What it really boils down to is time...game clocks using them on EVERY single play. Coaches play entirely too slow. I started using a clock in 1998 when I visited Reggie in Texas for the Shootout. I have never seen the game at such an intense and interesting speed. They had so much that I liked down there I brought it all back to Ohio. But at the end of the day coaches just couldnt keep up. Everyone wanted to take their time, have a smoke, a drink, a phone call or whatever in between plays instead of focusing on the game. Even with a 60 second clock guys were just lagging and they lost interest. I didnt want to lose coaches so I got rid of it.
Personally because I am a "coach" first and know what I want to run I can set up in 35 seconds leaving the defense only 45 total on every play. I can have my defense in place and ready to go no matter how fast a coach sets up because I know my team.
We can play any rules set you guys want to. Its never really been my complaint....but set up time, adjustments overall length of game is.
I may have had questions but I didnt complain once about the rules on saturday. My games were 7-0, 21-13 and 8-7 under the 6 plays set.
I know coaches are not big on the 6 plays per quarter but theres no way I'd make a 6 hour drive knowing I have to play slow coaches on crawl ball boards and only get 2 or 3 games in when I can just play the local coaches, maybe go get a 8-3 record and just scrap the Columbus games and take my chances as lower seed.
If Im losing all my games in Illinois and Indiana whats my incentive to make a trip to Columbus? If Im already going to make the playsoffs I can just take the losses play the local guys and wait and see if I earn a trip to the big dance...
Ive been there done that over the past 13 years. Ive watched it succeed and fail in that time period too.
Do I have all of the answers? Nope
I just cant afford to keep revisiting the same systems.
Like it or not travel leagues resemble mini tournaments.
I applaud you guys for keeping it going
Sometimes you just have to keep it simple...after all we just want to play right?

AJ

Yeah, I understand the 8 boxes game and how it is functional for out of towners. I am actually looking forward to having discussions on how to properly implement it into everyones schedule next season. I posted what I did because I don't want these ideas to spiral out of control.
I also want to figure out how to implement a hurry up style of timing into our game. I know my offense inside and out, I'll scheme you jokers to death!

These disussions should start taking place on the Mid-Ohio message board. It doesn't have a lot going on right now, but it is reasons like this that I set it up on the league's website. Sign up is free! http://midohiomfl.webs.com/apps/forums/
