I WILL HIT THIS TOMORROW.

QUITE A FEW CHANGES FOR ME PERSONALLY.

THING IS, THERE ARE SO MANY CHOICES.

HOW 'BOUT DEM COWBOYS!!!!!!!frstplc frstplc frstplc frstplc

OldSchool 02-11-2009 07:17 AM

Cowboy substitutions...

Here are the changes I'd make to the roster.

On Offense:

QB Roger Staubach for Aikman

RB Either Robert Newhouse or Moose Johnston at Fullback; or Preston Pearson as the 3rd down back... instead of Barber.

TE I'd go with Billy Joe DuPree, Doug Cosbie, or Jay Novacek (take your pick) over Witten.

OL/C John Fitzgerald or Tom Rafferty over Stepnoski

OL/T Erik Williams for Flozell Adams

On Defense:

First and Foremost after Bob Lilly... the very next name should have been HARVEY MARTIN... this is a glaring omission. ;) You can get rid of both Jim Jeffcoat, and Greg Ellis at DE. Insert Harvey and make Ed TooTall Jones the DEs. Randy White and Mr. Cowboy Bob Lilly will be the DTs.

LB I'd take out D. Ware and put in Thomas Hollywood Henderson and Ken Norton Jr. Maybe in another few years Demarcus gets back in.

DB Your secondary is pretty good... I'd probably take out Dennis Thurman (only) and then add in Cornell Green and Deion Sanders.

sweetka 02-11-2009 09:18 AM

Don't

Remove Demarcus Ware. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson played great in the Superbowl but then became an also-ran. He allegedly used drugs on the sidelines and only lasted four years with Cowboys. I used to play that team back then every year. Football wise, Demarcus is clearly the better player. Now, since his short career and troubles, Hollywood has bounced back after being blessed with winning a lottery and has redeemed himself admirablyl. But we're talking football right?

Where is Calvin Hill (Grant's Dad) or Duane Thomas at running back?

At tight end if you are passing a lot go with Novacek (Not home grown) and Witten. Hall of Famer Mike Ditka made a stop in the big D, if you are not going drafted only there is no peer.

For that big balanced tight end that can block and get open definitely Billy Joe Dupree. In fact, Billy Joe Dupree played his whole career in Dallas. I think he went to the Pro-Bowl at least 3 times.

THANKS DON,

Cowboy minds think alike, cause those are the EXACT changes i would have suggested. The only one i disagree with is D.Sanders. True, he is who he is, but a Dallas Cowboy on an all time Dallas Cowboy team?, aah, i dont know. Maybe, but i dont know. You coulda EASILY put MICHAEL DOWNS on that all time team:D :rtfl: :D

I feel you HOOP... about Deion. I added him because he played 5 years for the Cowboys, and he fit Tomkat's 3/4 year minimum requirement. Now hoop you gotta remember during Deion's tenure with the Boyz; Deion played on a Superbowl Championship team... He was First Team ALL PRO 4 times, and made it to 4 ProBowls. Not to mention... Deion played (not to shabby) offense, and QB's rarely threw his way when he was on defense.

Hoop sorry I didn't mention Michael Downs. He was good a good DB along with his partner Ron Fellows. When you look at Tomkat's selections... it's hard to squeeze those guys in. I'd like to see Benny Barnes, and Kevin Smith in as well, but there isn't a lot of room at the top.

Deion was all that with the Cowboys, but he was all that before he came also. And the fact that he was a 49er still sits bad with me. Ken Norton too, but atleast he was Cowboy first and was home grown. But my argument for Deion wont stand up, he was good. and yes, not bad at all on offense, especially with that nice deep catch on the Steelers in the SuperBowl.

Kevin Smith? hmmmmm. One of my favorites. Would have stood out more if not on a team already with 5 HOFers and much talent around him.

HOW ABOUT MY MAN HERSCHEL???????? He was good with Dallas and (in a way) along with JJ, brought the farm to cultivate those championships.

How do you take out Jeffcoat? He's Dallas's all-time leader in sacks. Keep em coming.

OldSchool 02-11-2009 07:26 PM

Why No Jeffcoat?!?

Here's why Tomkat...

Jeffcoat is only the sack leader because sacks were not an official stat until 1982. If all sacks were official then Jeffcoat would be fourth on the all-time Cowboy list. Here's the numbers if you include career sacks.

Harvey Martin 11 years 114 sacks
Randy White 14 years 111 sacks
Ed Jones 15 Years 106 sacks
Jim Jeffcoat 12 years 102.5 sacks

Here's some more info about Harvey Martin: (This is why I stated that his absence from the roster was a glaring omission.)

As part of the famed Doomsday Defense, Harvey Martin led the Cowboys in sacks seven times. Martin went to the Pro Bowl four times and was co-Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl XII (shared with teammate Randy White). He still holds team records for most sacks as a rookie (8 - 1973), in a season (23 - 1977), and career (114). Former Cowboys GM Tex Schramm stated "He'll be remembered as one of the great Cowboys of the golden years ... He was a great player, one of the first great pass rushers." Martin followed up his 23-sack 1977 season with a 14 sack performance in 1978, 9 in 1979, and 12 in 1980.

I was the only one who could not stand Fellows. He was a good player, but he was always a step late, and yes, he was the '80's version of Marc Washington. Duane Goodrich, anyone?

#47CLINCKSCALES WAS MY MAN TOO!!!!!!!!
The 80's version of #37James Washington.

All those numbers about Harvey Martin make the point, but another thing you could do is just watch him play. Watch him off the snap every play, the dude was just a frakin beast!!!!! Always pushing the OT back. THe OT had to play the "leverage and guide him" game to stop Harvey cause the power game wasnt gonna happen with him. And he was athletic enough to jump over or avoid the cut blocks as well.

Eugene Lockhart - Good call on that one. Because of the talent rich LB's the Cowboys have had, he will never get his due props. That straight held it down in the middle for years in the 80's as Danny White (another underrated because of the greatness at the position) took us to the playoffs.

Patrick Jeffers and Leon Powe anyone? How about Kevin Sweeney?

Calvin Hill was a great Cowboy RB... the problem is that Tomkat only had 4 RB slots so who gets replaced? Barber is the only one I see, but I was trying to suggest to Tomkat that he fill it with either a FB or a 3-d back, instead of another HB/TB.

As Good as Duane Thomas was... He didn't fit the requirement. he only played 2 years for the Cowboys. Though he's listed as a Cowboy from 70-72, he didn't play for the Cowboys during the 72 season; he only played in the 72 Superbowl. (after the 71 season) He was then traded to the Chargers for being a headcase and a malcontent. Next to Staubach he was the best player the Cowboys had on offense, but Landry got tired of his antics and sent him packing. It makes me wonder if Landry would have been able to put up with an athlete of today that puts himself over the team; or would he have just sent him packing?

Your assessment on the TEs is accurate. I knew Novacek had been to 5 ProBowls and was a 5 time ALL PRO. I also knew that DuPree and Cosbie both were 3 time ProBowlers. What I didn't realize was that Witten (like Novacek) has been to 5 ProBowls and is currently a 2 Time ALL PRO. He still has a lot of career left, so his numbers will grow. He definitely could end up being the best.

Demarcus ware fits the requirement to be on the list. The only things that the other LBs had over him was longevity. If he stays on this roster it isn't gonna hurt my feelings, because he's a great player.

Your assessment of Hollywood Henderson is a little off. Hollywood played for the Cowboys for 5 years. He not only played great during Superbowls, he played great in the playoffs and during the regular season. He's listed as one of the first Linebackers to enter the NFL with 4.6 speed in the 40. Back in his day that was very fast. So fast that the Cowboys had him returning kickoffs part time. The great Lawerence Taylor (LT) is on record saying that Thomas Hollywood Henderson is the reason that he wears the number 56.

While in Dallas this cat was never an also-ran. His 5 years are marked with spectacular and consistent play at the linebacker position. It wasn't his play on the field that got him sent packing, it was his sideline antics, destructive lifestyle, and on air comments towards opposing teams that made Landry get rid of him.

Yes Hollywood liked to run off at the mouth, but he definitely backed it up on the field. His mouth, antics, flambouyant lifestyle, and drug addiction may be some of the reasons he only played in one ProBowl; but he is easily in the top 5 of alltime greatest Cowboy Linebackers, and he would rank in the top 2 of alltime greatest Cowboy Outside Linebackers. If he isn't #1 then it's Chuck Howley.

I definitely agree with you that him turning his life around is admirable, but strictly judging him on his football tenure with the Dallas Cowboys... He ranks at the top.

Here's my own ranking for Cowboys LBs: (This list does not include Greg Ellis because he's really a DE)

1. Chuck Howley
2. Thomas Hollywood Henderson
3. Ken Norton Jr.
4. LeeRoy Jordan
5. Eugene Lockhart
6. Demarcus Ware
7. Bob Bruenig
8. Deter Coakley
9. D.D. Lewis
10. Dave Edwards

Honorable mention: Jerry Tubbs, Mike Hegman, and Dat Nguyen

AINT NUTTIN IGNANT ABOUT THOSE PLAYERSppcrn

#75Phil Pozderac was a monster himself during his time with the boys and #42 Derrick Lassic is a hometown hero from Westchester County, NY, so there is a soft spot.
Now the other 2 - :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: ,

Hey Don,

GREAT POST THERE. Excellent evaluation of the LB's. Glad to see Lockhart getting some props, cause i surely dont hear his name mentioned much.
It is too bad Nguyen and Coakley played during the down years of the Cowboys, i wonder how good they would have been had they played a few years earlier or started a few years later.

Not one of the greats, but solid for his few years - #58Darrin Smith

23 sacks in a season?? Must be when they were not keeping this stat because 22 was the record that was just broken by M.Stahan a couple of years ago????????

thanks guys for all the Cowboy talk, now I know who to add to my teams .....

Now we have to decide who stays and who goes. Do you need 2 QBs on an elec fball team?

QB Aikman and/or Staubach
RB PICK 4 Smith, Dorsett, Perkins, Barber, Newhouse, Moose, Preston Pearson, Calvin Hill
WR PICK 4 Irvin, Tony Hill, Bob Hayes, Drew Pearson
TE PICK 1 Witten, Novacek, DuPree
OL PICK 5 Rayfield Wright, Larry Allen, Nate Newton, Flozell Adams, Mark Stepnoski, John Fitzgerald, Tom Rafferty, Erik Williams,

DB PICK 6 Mel Renfro, Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters, Everson Walls, Darren Woodson, Dennis Thurman, Deion Sanders, Michael Downs, Bill Bates
LB PICK 4 Chuck Howley, DeMarcus Ware, Lee Roy Jordan, Hollywood Henderson, Ken Norton Jr.
DL PICK 4 Bob Lilly, Ed Jones, Jim Jeffcoat, Greg Ellis, Harvey Martin, Randy White

Remember, this is a team of the greatest COWBOYS. Does not matter what they did anywhere else, what did he do while playing for the Cowboys? Joe Montana, for example was a great QB, but for the 49ers. You can't say he should be the QB for the greatest Chiefs team.
