When was this board made?

Hello,

Can anyone tell me what year the board below is from please?

WEIRDWOLF 06-09-2007 05:34 AM

What teams were in the set? That may help in pinning down the year.

First Board

Ahhh....my first board that I received for Christmas way-back-when......mine icluded the Cowboys-Rams - - before the "red-peg" Total Team Control version came out.

Correction!

I couldn't find any dates on my boxes, so research shows that there were 2 NFC Championship Games played between the Rams and Cowboys: 1975 and 1978. So that means the games were released the following year - '76 or '79.

Thanks!

Yes, it is Cowboys vs Rams in that set too. I just scored it off of Ebay, I have been looking for a bigger board and wanted a vintage one instead of the new 620 by Miggle.

I knew you guys could probably tell me how old it was, I appreciate the info.

Thanks again!

1970 and here's why.

There were four divisions in the NFL, and two in the AFL. The Superbowl was called the AFL/NFL Championship game at the time (1969). These games usually run one year behind.

Both the Rams and Cowboys lost to the Vikings and Browns Respectively. The AFC was still not featured with exception to the smaller board that featured their teams.

The Rams/Cowboys matchup featured the two Divisional Playoff losers in the then NFL for 1969. A Superbowl game was made the same year that featured the Vikings/Cheifs. Not to sweat the Browns as they were so popular the decision was made to feature Rams/Cowboys in the standard set due to overstock. As you know the Vikes got smashed and the rest is history. That set had what is commonly known as "red peg" bases that snapped directional prongs into a hole at the front of the base to better simulate plays. These bases were replaced by the dial bases that we use today.

Also, this set does not feature TTC (Total Team Control) bases that surfaced as early as 1972 in the Colt/Cowboy games.

Hmm..... that set looks strangely familiar. I bought one like that in the summer of '74. A little research shows that in December of '73 the Rams played the Cowboys in a divisional game and the following week the Vikings beat the Cowboys on their way to the Superbowl. The answer might best lie in what color uniforms the Rams are painted in. Are they painted white and blue or yellow and blue? In '73 the Rams switched to yellow so if the teams on the box are indeed yellow and blue then I would say that game was made in '74! Also, in '74 the red peg TTC bases were still being sold as the set I bought was made entirely of those. So Shabby, what color are those Rams?????

WEIRDWOLF 06-10-2007 11:05 PM

I just got that exact set a month ago and had not really looked closely at it till your post. The photo on the box is Rams Cowboys and the Rams are in blue. No yellow. 26 NFL teams were in existence and shown on the box. In that photo the Browns are shown as an AFC Team. There are no red peg bases shown or mentioned anywhere on the box-only single clips.

It's really a shame that no one has ever put together a comprehensive listing of all the fields that have been produced. You would think that someone would have done this by now. I've seen partial listings but nothing that captures it all.

Now I'm curious?

Fellas,

The board's like these came with the Giants in dark blue and the browns in white.I'm not big on dates ,but what year did they play. I can only place this game between 1968-1973? Just curious. Also, didn't this game come with the Browns vs the Jets one year. they were the first painted tudor men I ever had and I'm sure that was around 1973-74.Just curious?

WoW!

You guys know your stuff!

Thanks again for the info. I have yet to receive it via Fed Ex, as I just got it off Ebay. I pray that it makes it to So Cal form Ohio and arrives undamaged.

Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge.

I am stoked and can not wait to get my hands on it.

I agree with 1970. My junior year of college at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, my wife bought me this exact set from a "Big K" store. It had the directional wheels and also had red peg bases, but no red pegs.

I'm only 99% sure.

I must have seen or owned every board at some point. I used to have a chronology so maybe I need to recomplile it. Take a look at your box. You will notice that the pictures on the side of the box are in the bluescale that came with the early 620 snow boards (1967, 1968, 1969). The Bluescale was used in what I call the transition years (1970, 1971-72 for clearing what was left of the boxes). If you look closely at your box when you get it you will notice a boarder placed around the picture of your gameboard. This boarder conceals where they merely placed the picture over the original snow board 620 field. This was a common pratice for the Tudor company. The boards that the other coaches are referring to (73-74) have the color pictures of the teams and came with a playbook for the TTC'S that were introduced. These games are the same with exception to the sprue containing stickers for ball markers and Chains. You will note that your set has two straight sticks instead of the more decorative art and "Fat Head" quarterbacks. There are so many ways to tell the year of a game. These are just a few.

I think I am going to recompile the information. I pretty much have it memorized. Most people know me on Ebay. My handle is "Walapalupe". I mainly deal exclusively with EF antiques. Hope this clarifies things further. Thanks Hilltopper!

Just tried this 62o board today

I just got this board and it is sweet. It is in perfect condition, the board runs smoothly and is way quiter than my newer Super Bowl board.

I absolutely love this, and thanks to everyone for telling me how old this board was.
