You're correct when you talk about the owners protecting their investment. Team owners pay their top players multi-millions of dollars at one time. Those owners want to reduce the chances of those millions being thrown away as a result of a multi-season or career ending hit. In an effort to protect that investment, that being the player, certain rule changes have to be made.

I think it works out for everyone. The owners can keep the best players on the field. The players will have a chance at establishing long careers. The fans get to see their favorite players for a long time.
